The objective of the first level English exam is to ascertain that students have a good level B1 as defined by the Common European Framework. Exams may be written and/or oral. A typical exam will test receptive skills (the ability to understand English) and productive skills (ability to express oneself in English).
Students are expected to have an active knowledge of everyday vocabulary and lexis related to their particular field of study.
With regards to grammar students should have a good passive knowledge of, and be able to produce, albeit with some errors, the following structures:

  • present, past, future, conditional, simple, continuous, perfect, active and passive tenses
  • adjectives, superlatives and comparatives
  • adverbs and adverbial phrases
  • nouns, articles and pronouns determiners and quantifiers
  • direct and indirect speech
  • modals
  • relative clauses, conjunctions
  • use of -ing and the infinitive

RECOGNITION OF CERTIFICATES

From the academic year 2020/2021 the certifications recognized by the Faculty, corresponding to a Level B1 of the CEFR, are as follows:
- Cambridge ESOL B1/ PET (or above, i.e. First, Advanced, Proficiency certificates)
- IELTS 4.5 (or above)
- TOEFL paper based 450 (or above), computer based 133 (or above) or internet based 45 (or above)
- Trinity ISE ESOL level 1 (or above)

NB: "Trinity Grades Exams in Spoken English" (GESE) certificates are not valid.

The recognition of the certificates can take place by submitting an application to the Area Council of the course of study and only if they have been obtained during the enrollment period or, at most, in the two years prior to enrollment at the University.

The instructors and lecturers are not authorized to verbalize the recognition, so students intending to have one of the above certificates recognized are asked not to book the exam dates and not to deliver the certificate to the teacher or the language instructor, but to follow the procedures indicated by the individual Board of studies.

For students’ understanding and practice, several former written tests are linked below for download.
